Improving the Cash Flow
11.30.2008
Last week, we focused on "Improving the Cash Flow in Your Small Business." Having enough money to get through daily transactions is a pressing concern for most small business owners. In these dire economic times and especially with the holidays coming, most small retail businesses are looking forward to that extra influx of cash to get them through to the new year. What they do with the extra cash (if consumers even decide to spend) is cause for concern. If you own one of the small businesses that are counting on this year's holiday season to stay afloat in the new year, please take into account all of the important cash flow tips outlined in the fantastic article above. Do you have any more tips for business owners? Let's start the season of giving by sharing tips on how to save and how not to be a Holiday cash casualty!

Most students entering an Entrepreneurship Program do not even know the difference between net profit and cash flow. Cutting cost is one way to improve cash flow but entering new markets (cheaply through the internet) increases sales which in turn increases cash flow. Small businesses need more exposure to what is available to them concerning debt or equity financing, marketing, etc. Many already have helpful tools on their computer but are unaware of them such as templates on Excel.

One way to improve cash flow is it cut expenses.

If you're buying advertising, don't go with the rate sheet. It's almost always flexible, especially when less advertising is being sold.

Another way to cut ad costs is to buy a larger ad and divide it up. For example, an entire page costs less than four one-quarter pages. Get three other businesses to go in with you and split it up. Give it a theme and banner head such as, Main Street Merchants.

Also, send press releases to the media to get free exposure. The key is to offer real news, not self-glorification and/or useful information.
